Why Learn to Skate?
JEREMY STETTIN
Skateboarding has shaped my life. Skating taught me discipline and perserverance, and introduced me to one of the most positive and inclusive communities. It also taught me how to get back up after a fall (or 6) and socialize with people of all backgrounds and beliefs. Skating changed me from a socially anxious kid who never wanted to go to soccer practice on weekends into a confident, determined adult who lives for the chance to practice my sport and share it with others. And while I can't promise all of these benefits to anyone who takes my class, I can promise a fun time.
About Me
Making a job of what I love
I'm Jeremy Stettin, a skateboarder of twelve years and Mechanical Engineer. During the pandemic, a neighbor asked me out of the blue to give his daughter a skate lesson, and we both had a great time. Three years, many students, and countless lessons later, I still love making skateboarding accessible, fun, and a little less intimidating for students of all ages. I believe facing and overcoming your fears builds confidence, and skating is great because you can do this unlimited times every day! I make sure that my students have fun, strengthen themselves, and skate within their abilities every session.
How I Teach
The first lesson is: have fun! This is my mantra for teaching and it’s why I let my students decide what we work on every lesson. Most kids interested in learning to skate are intimidated by the older skaters at the park or feel discouraged after the first heavy fall (we call these "slams"). I help my students feel comfortable skating in front of people and experience the thrill of learning something they thought was too hard by breaking new concepts into easier steps and giving continuous feedback. Even simple tricks may feel dangerous to a beginner, which is why I give extra support when we’re trying things like learning to drop in on a ramp or ride off a ledge (or if they just ask me to).
Skating a ramp requires a lot of balance, so I give my students a little extra support when we're starting something new. After a few tries like this, Maddie was ready to do it solo.
Foot placement and proper balancing are vital when tackling an obstacle you haven't skated before. I make sure my students are set up for success before trying something new.
Riding off the curb can be tricky if you don't know how to approach it, but once you realize all you have to do is lift your front wheels up, it's pretty simple.
I always give feedback after each attempt. Sometimes, moving a foot up a couple of inches or bending the knees a little more can make something hard, easy.
